Real Madrid fell to defeat on their visit to the Olympic Sports Center in Athens, where they faced Panathinaikos on Euroleague matchday 33 in the penultimate clash of the Regular Season. Our team fought for the win to the buzzer but came up short against opposition who were too strong from the outside and solid in defense. Tavares was the top-rated player for the madridistas with 12 points, 12 rebounds and a PIR of 26. Madrid were surprised by an inspired Panathinaikos early on, as Nedovic, Papapetrou and Papagiannis led their team to a 16-5 lead with 6 minutes gone. Laso's boys tried to halt the Greek onslaught through Heurtel and Poirier, but the hosts finished the first quarter on top, 22-11.

The madridistas began to settle into the game thanks to a Heurtel triple at the start of the second period. As the minutes ticked by, the battle switched to beneath the post, where Tavares (6 consecutive points and 5 rebounds) and Papagiannis played out a colossal duel. With contributions from Llull, Rudy and Taylor, our boys improved their shooting, but Panathinaikos stood strong from three to head into the break 9 up (41-32).

The Greek side continued their impressive display following the restart. Aggressive in defense and with everything going in from the outside. Real Madrid refused to lie down though and still managed to get right back in the game. Tavares' point-scoring and rebounds coupled with triples for Rudy and Llull made it 56-54 with 29 on the clock. The third quarter went the way of the madridistas and they would fight for the win in the final 10.
Hard-fought finish
The team came out firing only for Panathinaikos to step on the gas and pull away once again. Madrid dug deep for a heroic comeback through Llull and Heurtel with four successive three-pointers to make it 80-75 with two minutes left on the clock. However, the hosts held their nerve and Heurtel's triple in the final play just wasn't enough (87-86).
