Out for a win to edge closer to last 16

PREVIEW. 03/11/2021

Real Madrid welcome Shakhtar to the Bernabéu on Matchday 4 of the Champions League group stage (6:45pm CET).

Matchday 4 of the Champions League group stage sees Real Madrid take on Shakhtar Donetsk this evening at the Santiago Bernabéu 15 days on from the sides' last meeting (6:45pm CET). Carlo Ancelotti's charges will be out to secure a third win and move a step closer to the competition's last 16.

The 5-0 away win recorded at Kiev's Olympic Stadium on a night when Vini Jr and Karim Benzema grabbed the headlines offers the squad the best possible motivation to produce a repeat performance here. The Brazilian, who comes into this one fresh from having handed the team victory in Elche courtesy of a double, has already bagged a brace against the Ukrainian outfit this term. Frenchman Benoît Bastien will be the man in the middle for a match in which Real Madrid have the chance to notch the club's 1,000th European Cup goal (currently on 999).

"It's an important matchday and if we were to win, it'd be really signficiant", insisted Ancelotti in his pre-match press conference, where he was joined by Dani Carvajal: “We treat every game like it were a cup final and want to win the group”. Benzema, who just like Vini Jr. has two goals to his name in this season's Champions League, returns to the fray from this encounter.

In need of a win
Shakhtar have little room for error. De Zerbi's troops need to get something out of the game to keep their qualification hopes alive. They currently lie in fourth spot on one point, which they gained on Matchday 2 against Inter Milan. However, they are sitting pretty in second spot behind Dynamo Kiev in the Ukrainian top flight and routed Desna 4-1 in their final outing before the trip to the Bernabéu.
