Real Madrid ambassador Santiago Solari and world champion chess player Magnus Carlsen have presented the first online charity chess festival at Real Madrid City. It will be organised by chess24.com in order to collaborate with the Real Madrid Foundation's social sports inclusion projects.
Solari underlined the similarities between football and chess, "as games of strategy where dominating space is key", as well as the advantages of chess as an educational tool. The club ambassador took on the Norwegian champion, who recently consolidated his status at the top of the world rankings, in an exhibition game commentated on by Pepe Cuenca, which looks set to be repeated on November 15.
The head of chess24, David Martínez, highlighted the exceptional nature of the festival: "We'll have 12 hours packed full of chess and loads of fun, with some of the biggest national and international masters”. The proceeds collected via donations and auctions during the festival will go towards the Real Madrid Foundation's social sports inclusion projects which help a wide range of groups at risk of exclusion.
