Real Madrid's legacy in the competition began in Switzerland in a match against Servette.
Real Madrid's first taste of European Cup action came on 8 September 1955. This was the competition's maiden edition and the Whites claimed a 2-0 victory over Servette in Geneva. Miguel Muñoz struck the madridistas' first-ever goal in the European Cup, before Rial rounded off the scoring for José Villalonga's men.

That season also marked the beginning of Real Madrid's legacy in the tournament as the team went on to secure glory after overcoming Servette, Partizan and AC Milan in the knockout rounds. The Whites became the first club to etch their name on the tournament trophy after prevailing over Stade de Reims in the final in Paris.
Most decorated club
Sixty-five years on, Real Madrid are the European Cup's most decorated team with 13 trophy triumphs to the club's name. The madridistas also lead the way in terms of wins (262), matches played (439) and goals scored (973). Meanwhile, in the individual stakes, the club's record appearance-maker is Iker Casillas (152), whilst Cristiano Ronaldo is the leading marksman with 105 goals.
