One foot in the last-sixteen of the Copa del Rey. Real Madrid made sure there was no upset against Fuenlabrada, running out 0-2 winners thanks to goals from Asensio and Lucas Vázquez from the penalty spot. The Whites put in a very disciplined performance and created enough chances to have won the game by more. Zidane gave game time to those who have found minutes hard to come by so far, in the first leg of a tie which will be settled at the Bernabéu in a month's time.

The Whites took control of the ball from the get-go. Ceballos and Llorente set the pace of the game, while Achraf and Lucas Vázquez looked threatening up the right. However, it was Fuenlabrada who created the first real chances of the game. Originally with a dangerous cross from the right, and then again with a headed effort from Miguel Ángel.

Off the bar
Madrid were moving the ball around well but lacking any real penetration. A Ceballos free-kick was all Codina had to deal with in the opening 30 minutes, but that would all change as the game edged closer to half-time. Llorente, who had already sent off a warning shot from the edge of the area moments earlier, came closest on 44’. The midfielder unleashed a rasping drive which came crashing back off Codina's crossbar. Then, in the very next move, Mayoral could have scored when well placed in the area, but the former Madrid keeper kept him out twice in quick succession.

Real Madrid upped the tempo after the break as the Whites looked to turn their domination in to chances. Achraf, one of the liveliest players, was brought down by Fran Garcia for the penalty after good work on the right. Asensio stepped up and put away the spot kick with 63 minutes on the clock. The goal spurred Zidane’s men on, but Codina kept Fuenlabrada in the match. The goalkeeper prevented Asensio from doubling his tally and denied Mayoral who had two good efforts kept out.
With Fuenlabrada starting to tire, the Whites looked to extend their lead. Lucas Vázquez came close with a strike that hit the post (77'). It was a warning sign of what was to come as soon after Theo was fouled in the area by Candela, who was sent off for a second yellow, and the penalty was converted by the Galician forward (80'). In the closing stages Vallejo was given his marching orders for a tackle on Milla but in the end Real Madrid take home a 2-0 advantage after the first leg of the round of 32 cup match.
