Marcelo: "We're still top but must learn from our mistakes"

NEWS | 22/02/2017

"We remain top and on Sunday we’ve got an important clash against Villarreal", insisted Carvajal.
Marcelo took his place in the starting line-up against Valencia at Mestalla and he spoke at the final whistle to reflect on the encounter: "We started very poorly and there can be no excuses for it, that was our fault. We did all we could to at least have got a draw, but we conceded two daft goals and we must learn from our mistakes. We still remain top but we have to change things, we can't be starting games like that".

"Valencia are a great side. They've had a tough time of things but this is a difficult place to come. Their fans and players really get on top of you. We'll now learn from our mistakes to ensure that this doesn't happen again. We've lost but we now have to move on".

Carvajal: "Ordinarily we would have won the game"
"We put a shift in and spent virtually all of the game in their half and shifted them from side to side, created chances and applied a high press… From the 10th minute it was a pretty good all-round performance, which ordinarily would have been enough to see us win the game".

Valencia’s goals
“Two isolated moves in 10 poor minutes turned the game into an uphill battle for us. We’re not machines, we’re human, any team can get off to a bad start. Zaza scored a great goal and then we stupidly lost possession and that put them 2-0 up. That’s football and sometimes you’re going to lose”.

League leaders
“Any team in LaLiga would love to be in our position. Today was a free hit of sorts, we had a chance to extend the advantage over our challengers but that's gone now. We remain top and on Sunday we’ve got an important clash against Villarreal, and we’ll be going all out to get the win”.
