“I have absolute faith in this team and we have the quality to win the Champions League", said the madridista goalkeeper.
Thibaut Courtois answered questions from the media in an online press conference ahead of Real Madrid's first Champions League clash against Shakhtar Donetsk at the Alfredo Di Stéfano (Wednesday, 6:55pm CEST): “The Champions League is hugely important to us and to the club. It's special and it's crucial that we start strongly at home and take all three points because that will really help us out over the course of the season”.

“We can't wait for tomorrow to come so we can put on a good display and win the game. Every one of us wants to do the best we possibly can. I have to help the team out at tough moments and there are key times where the goalkeeper has to step up because we're not scoring many at the moment. Every player will always give his best to help the team win".

Personal run of form
“I feel great. I've kept working hard since the first day I got here until now and it's never easy to make a change. When you come to a new team, you have to adapt, and I expect to keep training hard every day and helping the team”.

The squad
“I have faith in this squad and believe we can win the competition. Real Madrid always start as favourites for this tournament and we have the quality to win the Champions League”.

Ramos' possible absence
"We'll see tomorrow. He's the captain and we'll always miss him. We have other world class defenders and we've got a very deep squad. We'll miss him if he doesn't play because he's the captain but I trust the other players".

The best teams in the world play in this competition and Real Madrid will always be among the favourites.

"We're looking forward to the game. We've kept three clean sheets in our five LaLiga games so far. We have to keep getting better and learning. That's what we do in training with the gaffer because other sides might change their system to play against us. Those are things which happen in football, and in the modern game teams love to attack. That's to be expected with the quality on display in LaLiga"

Cádiz clash
"They defend very well, sit deep with two banks of four and the strikers help out so it's not easy. We had to get a lot of people ahead of the ball, so when there's a mistake and they counter, we've got situations where it's two against two. They're things we work on with the coach. It can happen, they didn't score many goals and it's not a problem if they get the odd shot away".

Can you win the Champions League?
"I trust in the squad. We can win the Champions LeagueReal Madrid always starts out as favourite and I have absolute faith in this team because we've got the quality to win it. The season is very long. We're hungry and we want to fight for the Champions League. We can't forget that there are other good sides. We won't be the absolute favourites to win it but we're Real Madrid and we're always going to fight and compete to do so. The best teams in the world play in this competition, it's the greatest, and Real Madrid will always be among the favourites".

LaLiga or the Champions League
"We always focus on every competition. There are 38 games in LaLiga, from September to May, and it's important to play well in those so we're in good shape for the Champions League and vice-versa. We want to do a great job in both the Champions League and LaLiga. We don't prioritise one over the other".

"He's a great goalkeeper, he has a real future ahead of him and he looks sharp in training. When he gets his chance to play he'll do a great job. We help each other in training to make sure we're ready".

Fear of coronavirus?
"In terms of lockdowns and COVID-19, each country is making the decisions it must in order to ensure the leagues and the Champions League can go ahead. The protocol for us is extremely strict. It will depend on how the pandemic develops. I hope we can see fans back in the stands soon".
