- Matchday 27
The rip-roaring start made by Obradoiro, featuring a masterclass of triples, with six in the opening stanza - five of which were netted by the inspired Simons and Singler, who netted 17 of the team's 22 points in the early stages - allowed the guests to hit the front and establish a six-point lead (13-20, min. 9). However, the visitors' bright start didn't set Real Madrid of its stride and the hosts remained patient in attack and hauled itself level with some great work fromTavares (5 points and rebounds apiece) and Campazzo (5 and 3 assists) in the first minutes of the second quarter after a run of 11-2 (24-22, min. 12).
Continually trading the lead
The script didn't alter much for the remainder of the first half. The Galicians continued to strike with three-pointers. The guests sunk another five points, three of which came from Brodziansky, as a part of an 11-point run, whilst the Whites' scoring was coming courtesy of a bigger array of players. Carroll, with 8 points, was pacing the team in offense, where Yusta, Reyes, Ayón and Thompkins were also key figures. With neither team able to dominate things, the sides continued to trade baskets until the break, at which point the madridistas had the lead, courtesy of a triple on the buzzer from Rudy that made it 45-43.
Real Madrid needed to put a stop to the joy that Obradoiro was having on treys if it was to avoid any problems in this game. And the hosts did just that during a stunning third stanza at both ends of the court. The side defended well and shackled the guests' shooters, sending Simons to the bench with four fouls and Obradoiro began to struggle to sink points. In offense, the Whites continued to perform well as a team and retained its efficiency in the scoring stakes. Causeur, who hadn't netted up until this point, Rudy and then Campazzo, paced the team in a stanza in which Laso's men established the biggest lead of the contest with a +16 after a 19-2 run between the 21st and 28th minute. Real Madrid now had victory in its sights (71-56, min. 30).
Defense plays key role
Whilst in the third stanza the hosts restricted the opposition to 13 points, a tally they doubled in offense (26), there was to be no let-up in the Madrid masterclass as Obradoiro was prevented from getting back into the game. The hosts' lead was now constantly around the 20-point mark and the scores stood at 81-58 with five minutes remaining. The contest was now over and Real Madrid solidly claimed another win in its final outing before the playoff series against Panathinaikos begins on Wednesday. Campazzo and Tavares came a whisker away from a double-double and the Whites ended the game with 12 players on the scoreboard after Pantzar and Deck got in on the act (94-70, min. 40). With the team's target now accomplished in the league, a big week of European action awaits at the Palacio.
