NEWS | 25/05/2017The midfielder was the star of the latest episode of ‘Campo de estrellas’ on Realmadrid TV.
“My parents have told me that my dad chose the first name of their kids and my mum chose the second one. She's Dutch and she named me Marco after Marco van Basten. I got given a ball when I was a kid and I remember playing football and other sports as well, although my parents always put a lot of emphasis on studies. Ever since I was young, I don't know why, but I supported Real Madrid and I've always admired them”.
“I was out and about one day with the family and we went for a walk by the port and there was Florentino Pérez's boat. My mum recognised him and called him over so we could take a photo and she told him that I was going to be a Real Madrid player one day. One of life's coincidences, that's what happened and he still remembers that beautiful anecdote as well”.
Loss of a loved one
“My mother's death was very hard. We were a very close family and my dad, my brother and I were left alone to carry on. We really supported each other, helped each other out, and we're still very close. I always dedicate my goals to her”.
“The week of my debut with Mallorca, they told me I was going to train with the first team. I was 17 years old and it came as a surprise. The experienced players helped me to feel part of the team. I even felt embarrassed to score a goal against Aouate. I didn't expect to play but I got on in the 86th minute and it was a wonderful feeling, something I'd dreamed about for my whole life”.
Signing for Real Madrid
“In the winter my agent came and told me that Real Madrid were interested in me. There were calls from several clubs, it was hectic. But Florentino phoned before a game to tell me I was going to be a Real Madrid player. It all happened in one day: we went to Madrid, I signed, visited the Bernabéu and Valdebebas and then we went back to Mallorca to finish off the season. It was all so quick and intense, but I felt an incredible joy”.
Spell at Espanyol
“It was decided I would go out on loan which I think was for the best because I was very young and needed to play. The year at Espanyol was fantastic for me to gain experience and turn me into more of a footballer”.
Return to Real Madrid
“One day after dinner during pre-season, the coach called me in for a chat and he told me he wanted me to stay with the team and that I was going to start the European Super Cup. What better way to start: in the starting line-up, winning a title and getting a goal. Then it'll go down in history that I scored on my debut in all the other competitions as well”.
