“That madridista DNA comes to the fore at the most difficult moments," underlined the European basketball champions' coach.

Chus Mateo and Felipe Reyes were the big names present at the second day of the Real Madrid Universidad Europea University School's White Week. The event, moderated by Emilio Butragueño, was attended by the basketball first-team coach and madridista legend, who discussed the Undécima won in Kaunas on Sunday.

The coach reflected: “What we have achieved still hasn't really sunk in. I've been a Real Madrid fans since I was very young and I carry this team's values deep inside. I know we've done something remarkable. To be part of this history and to think your name will be alongside guys like Pablo Laso, Manuel Sainz and many more makes my head spin.”

“When the buzzer went at the end of the game I tried to keep my emotions in check and show respect for the opposition, who deserved to win it just as much as we did. It was a beautiful experience. I was convinced we'd be able to do it. We were on the brink time and again, against Partizan, against Barça in the semis, in a final that looked practically impossible given how Olympiacos had been playing, but we've come through it all. The thing I'm most proud of is the chemistry that has been created in the dressing room."

Key moment
“We all knew that the final ball had to go to Sergio Llull. You could see it in the players' eyes. If there was one guy who had to take that shot, it was Sergio. He hit the shot that took us to glory. We have world class players but nobody could deliver in that situation like he can. I'm delighted for him because he deserved it more than anyone. He's part of the history of this great club."

Reyes: “With character and spirit, these players have managed to get their hands on the Undécima”
“I really struggled this year, more than ever. I'd never had that feeling of a heart-attack before but I sure did on Sunday. The nerves are enormous from the outside. It just looks so difficult. You suffer as a player but if you're playing, you don't feel it quite so much, you forget it all and focus on doing your best. The nerves are more for the guys who aren't on court. With desire and faith, this team has made history. All that suffering turned into joy and happiness."

His role now
“I already fulfilled my dream of playing for Real Madrid and my final wish was to remain linked to the club that has given me so much. I was fortunate enough, thanks to my experience and years at the club, that the president allowed me to remain part of this great team. My role is all about being close to the team and supporting my teammates, representing the club at different events. I try to display the values that I learned here."

Other speakers

José López Chicharro, Professor of Exercise Physiology at the Universidad Complutense and a member of the Real Madrid Medical Services, and Alejandro Lucía, Professor of Exercise Physiology at the Universidad Europea, spoke about the importance of physical exercise.
