Real Madrid landed the title after downing Argentina's Obras Sanitarias 103-104 in the final.
On 24 June 1978, Real Madrid's basketball team secured its third Intercontinental Cup triumph. That edition was played in Buenos Aires, where the Whites faced off against Brazil's Sirio, Italy's Pallacanestro Varese, the United States' Rhode Island University and Argentina's Obras Sanitarias. The madridistas and the tournament hosts both won all three of their opening games, which meant that the champion would be decided in the final-round match-up between the two teams.
Coughran, with 26 points, Brabender (25) and Szczerbiak (24) were the madridistas' star performers in the win over Obras Sanitarias, but it was a Prada basket with two seconds remaining that rounded off the scoring at 103-104. This victory capped off a 1978 in which the team had secured the European Cup a few months earlier. This was Real Madrid's third successive Intercontinental Cup crown.
