- Matchday 9
The leader s started well but faded in the first half, controlling the rhythm of game until the minute 7 (10-16), mixture of defense (2 blocks from Tavares) and the success from the outside line by Llull, Carroll (scored the first 7 points for the team in his 600th match for the Whites) and Taylor. But it was Bilbao Basket's second unit that changed the dynamics of the match. Mumbrú’s side got on top of the visitors in intensity and speed, with Brown (10) and Lammers (7) running the show, to achieve a 24-9 run, reaching the maximum of +9 in the 17' (34-25).
Garuba kept the Whites in it
With the bright start fading, Laso tried freshens is up in the attack with the introduction of Thompkins in his first game of the season and Nakic. However, the solution came in the shape of Garuba. The energy and talent from the youth-team product in every second on the court saw Real Madrid respond to the local bombardment with 7 points, 4 rebounds and 13 RIP. The leaders went in at the break with the score closer: 41-37.
Real Madrid were still a bit sluggish after returning from the locker room and could not find the spark in attack, although they were strong in the offensive rebound. Llull was the most impressive for the Whites in a third quarter in which Bilbao Basket came out on top with a 19-17 run, thanks to their defense and the good minutes from Bouteille. Taylor was sent off in this period after two identical personal fouls on the French guard (60-54, min. 30).
Llull forces overtime
The last quarter was aso evenly matched, with Real Madrid trying the comeback and Bilbao Basket preventing them. Each time it seemed that the leader was going to get on top, the locals responded with another outburst. A three pointer from Kulboka put the Whites in a lot of trouble, at 75-69 in the 37'. With Miribilla pressing, Real Madrid took a step forward in defence and the figure of Llull re-emerged. He scored the next eight points for his team and tied the match at 77 with 33 seconds left after three free throws. A steal from Campazzo in the next play allowed him to have the last possession, but he could not nail the trey that would have sealed the win. Overtime match.
The 5 minutes added saw endless mistakes by both teams. Real Madrid, thanks to 8 offensive rebounds, threw 13 three pointers but without success, only scoring one. Bilbao Basket were not very fine either and the match entered the last seconds at 82-81 and possession for the madridistas. Thompkins did not get the shot right and the victory was taken by the locals.
