A high-scoring match between two of the best attacks in the league was expected but at the start it was the defenses that took center stage. Outside success by Gran Canaria, with two treys to Real Madrid’s none, was the little difference in their favour after a low-scoring first quarter (18-14). Tavares (5 points and 4 rebounds) and Randolph (4 + 4) pulled the string for the Whites, while Wiley (6) and Hannah (5) got the points for the home side. The Cape Verdean made a spectacular block for Wiley.
The Whites not flowing
More of the same in the second quarter. Pedro Martinez’s side, with a prominent Hannah, took the initiative throughout the second quarter, even establishing the maximum in the 18th minute at 35-25. Without success on the three-pointers (0/9 at halftime) and an unusual 32% on the two-point shot, Real Madrid collapsed in attack. Only Carroll, with 7 of the 13 points for his team in this period, and a good defense, prevented things from being worse than the -8 at the end of the first half.
With the first Real Madrid trey, from Rudy in the 22nd minute, Laso's players changed things up and began to play with more spark in their game. Both he and Campazzo gave more speed and the defense were much more aggressive in the pass lines, causing a lot of losses for their opponents. In attack Causeur stepped it up and Real Madrid turned the scoreboard around with a run from 10 to 20 to get ahead at 45-47 in the 27th minute. The appearance of Eriksson and a technical foul in the same play on Tavares gave the home side a breather in the third quarter, the Whites' best so far (49-51).
Thompkins and Wiley, one for each side, ran the start of the last quarter. Real Madrid had a five-point advantage that Gran Canaria neutralized with two three-pointers (63-61, 36 minutes). But it was the Campazzo-Hannah duel that would decide the match and then the winning character of the Argentine base came out, as he took a step forward in the decisive minutes, dominating the ball and scoring eight consecutive points, for 10 in this quarter in four minutes. Hannah tried to respond but there were Tavares and Causeur, two of the most important players today, to finish with the victory (71-77). Rudy had to come out after a knock on his shoulder. Real Madrid pick up victories from the trips to the Canary Islands in a week.
