With the aim of promoting their global appeal online, Real Madrid have upped the focus on social networking and mobile and audio-visual content, which has seen them smash social media records, particularly on Facebook, the world's biggest social networking site.
The Madrid club was the fastest growing sports brand in 2016, not only on Facebook, but on all social networking platforms. Real Madrid had more than 1.6 billion video views in 2016, more than any other sporting organisation in the world. They also published 9 of the 10 best Facebook posts that year, cementing their supremacy on the site.
According to the club's general director, José Angel Sánchez, “Real Madrid's extraordinary worldwide audience is reflected in this historic milestone and it encourages us to keep working to consolidate our leading position on social networks. We have a fantastic relationship with Facebook and their strategic management team, which has allowed us to build a powerful and highly committed following".
