“We want to make it difficult for Barcelona by picking up three hugely important points in our bid to win the La Liga title”, declared the captain.“We want to make it difficult for Barcelona by picking up three hugely important points in our bid to win the La Liga title. We need to continue winning and wait for Barcelona to make a mistake. Córdoba, like Sevilla, also have a lot to play for”.
His memorable save in the Sánchez Pizjuán
“That was a moment of blind faith more than anything else. You try to tell yourself that you can make it to the ball. I threw myself at it and managed to get a hand to the shot. I had the belief that I could run from one post to the next in order to reach it”.
Semi-finals against Juventus
“The good news is that two teams with great players and a very high level of footballing ability are facing off against each other. Both sides have their own unique playing style and it will be an exciting tie, as the other semi-final will be. It will be a great game to watch”.
Winning a second successive Champions League title has never been achieved before and is an exciting challenge.
“Pirlo and Buffon are massive figures in world football and two stalwarts for their club and country. Every encounter I've had against them has been spectacular. Each game against them has contained joy and heartbreak”.
La Liga or the Champions League
“As the boss said the other day, the Champions League is completely in our hands while La Liga isn't. We have a 25% chance of winning the Champions League and if you were to ask me to choose one title then it is clear that the Champions League is still in our hands. Obviously Real Madrid fans are particularly fond of the European Cup. If you're asking me to pick one then I'd have to go with the Champions League”.
The most important moment of his career
“The European Cup in 2000. I went from playing in the third division to Spanish topflight and won that title. The World Cup was also unforgettable”.
The desire to win more titles
“Your mentality changes. When you're young you have more hunger, then later on you enjoy having an extensive trophy cabinet and when you know you're approaching the end of your playing career, you want to win games in order to make the fans happy. I've won a lot of titles and the joy and delight that gives the fans is just incredible”.
