The Real Madrid Foundation are partnered by the Salesians of Don Bosco, who have worked in the city since 1996 when the first Technology and Professional Training School was founded as well as two boarding schools in Ashaiman (Community 21). In 2006 a Youth Centre was inaugurated in Newtown (Community 1) in an area populated by fisherman displaced by the construction of the port, where a high rate of children not attending school was detected. This centre takes in children who can attend literacy classes, be fed, and enjoy various activities (theatre, arts and crafts…). These centres are linked to the Foundation’s socio-sporting school’s two headquarters in Tema.
The beneficiaries of the socio-sporting school are youths from the Professional Training Centre and boys and girls who participate in the activities at the Newtown Youth Centre. All are from homes with economic difficulties, employment instability, broken or single-parent families or are orphans. Aside from the sporting element, the attendees will benefit from participation in workshops on ethical education, healthcare and hygiene and will receive extra-curricular classes, psychological support where necessary, an annual medical check-up and a snack after the weekend’s matches.
