The Real Madrid Foundation has been working in partnership with the Fundación Revel on the socio-sporting schools programme in Colombia since 2008. The two institutions currently run 28 schools across the following locations: Aranzazu, Bogotá, Bucaramanga, Cali, Cartagena de Indias, Chinchina, Filadelfia, Ibague, Manizales, Pasto, Rionegro, Tumaco and Villamaría.
The schools cater for children aged between six and 17 who are at risk of social exclusion, consuming drugs and alcohol, exposure to violence or are linked to criminal activities. The participants come from families who have been displaced on account of violence, live in poor neighbourhoods and environments in which crime, violence and a lack of opportunities are a common feature.
Sporting activity provides these children with an escape from their daily reality of violence and provides them with the opportunity to acquire skills and values which could benefit them in their personal and professional development in the future.
The participants attend workshops about values and alcohol and drug consumption prevention and are offered regular medical checks. A number of workshops for parents and guardians have also been rolled out with a view to ensuring that the children continue to receive values training in the home environment.
