Since 2008, the Real Madrid Foundation, in partnership with the Fundación Revel (Revel Foundation), has been running the socio-sporting schools programme in Colombia and there are currently 44 schools operating throughout different parts of the country.
The schools are aimed at boys and girls aged between 6 and 17 who are at risk from social exclusion, drug use and alcohol consumption, exposed to violence or involved in criminal activities. The participants also come from families displaced by violence who have settled in marginal neighbourhoods, settings which are characterised by crime, violence and a lack of opportunities.
Sport is a means of distancing these youngsters from a daily landscape of violence and sports training provides them with the opportunity to acquire skills and values which could be useful for their future personal and professional development.
In addition to the sporting activities, Real Madrid's partnership with Microsoft ensures that the digital divide is reduced amongst the participants who attend the Cali and Bogota schools. They are given access to the new technologies and programs designed specifically for them, such as the "yo programo" (I program).
Attendees also take part in training workshops on values and alcohol and drug consumption prevention, which are complemented by periodic medical checks, whilst workshops have also been introduced for parents and guardians with a view to ensuring the continuation of the childrens' values training at home.
