The Under-19s remain unbeaten after drawing with Leipzig at home in the second Group Stage game of the UEFA Youth League. Arbeloa's boys were superior throughout the clash and enjoyed a glut of fine chances but were frustrated by an impressive performance from the opposition goalkeeper. A Palacios strike in the 46th minute put our team ahead but Leipzig levelled with 89 on the clock.
The first half saw all the best chances fall to the madridista youth team, who flew out of the blocks in attack, led by Palacios, alongside some impressive link-up between European debutants Vinicius Tobias and Iker Bravo. Arbeloa's team should have been ahead by the break but the Leipzig goalkeeper, who was the visitors' best player on the night, kept them out time and again, even repelling a Nico Paz penalty with 24 minutes gone.
In the second half, the team took to the pitch showing the same offensive mindset with which they had ended the first. Sure enough, just one minute after the restart, they were ahead. A swift move down the left involving Manu Serrano, who fizzed a ball across the box, and Palacios, who turned home at the front post, finally saw Nickisch beaten (46’).
From then on, the Under-19s had several more chances to increase their lead, but came up against the inspired Leipzig shot-stopper, who kept out Gonzalo, Nico and Jacobo all from point-blank range. Just as it seemed the three points would be staying at the Di Stéfano, Köhl found an equaliser with 89 minutes on the clock. In injury time, our academy side enjoyed more chances to win it and even had a Herrero goal ruled out for off-side with the last kick of the game.
