Real Madrid came away victorious from the Ciudad Deportiva Villarreal to extend their unbeaten run in the Primera Iberdrola to five games (0-2). Alberto Toril took charge of his first Madrid game and the coach got off to a winning start after goals by Athenea and Esther in the closing stages of the match. The madridistas looked to break the deadlock early on in the clash and with only a few minutes on the clock Esther tested the home goalkeeper but her effort was comfortably saved. Asllani tried her luck from outside the area in the 10th minute, but Elena pushed the shot away for a corner. Both Zornoza and the Swedish striker then fired long-range strikes over the crossbar from distance.
On the half-hour mark, Sheila had a great chance for the hosts, but Misa was on hand to deny her. After the re-start, Villarreal went close early on through Belén and Aïnoa, but they couldn’t find a way past Misa. Then, as the game approached the hour-mark, Esther thought she had opened the scoring for the Whites when she headed in from a corner, but the goal was ruled out for an infringement with the corner kick. The striker then had efforts saved by Elena on 66’ and 73’ – first with a header and then a fierce strike. Madrid kept looking for a way through and got their reward ten minutes from full-time. Athenea won back possession on the left of the area and riffled a right-footed shot into the net (0-1). Then Esther sealed the spoils when she latched onto a free-kick from Zornoza to double the visitors’ lead. Real Madrid must now turn their attention to the game against Breidablik in the Women’s Champions League on Wednesday (9 pm CET).
