Real Madrid beat Borussia Dortmund 2-0 in the final in London.
Real Madrid wrote a new chapter in the club's love affair with the European Cup on 1 June 2024. Our team strengthened its dominance in the top European competition after winning La Decimoquinta. Carlo Ancelotti's team proved once more that they are the kings of Europe after overcoming Borussia Dortmund in an unforgettable final at Wembley (London).
After a tough first half which ended goalless, Carvajal, MVP of the final, opened the scoring with a superb header in the 74th minute. Nine minutes later, Vini Jr. put the game to bed by making it 2-0. The Brazilian went on to add to his name in the history of Madrid by scoring in a Champions League final for the second time, having scored the goal in 2022 that clinched La Decimocuarta against Liverpool.
The road to the final
In the round of 16 we came up against Leipzig. It was a very tight tie that we managed to win 2-1 on aggregate. Manchester City were the opponents in the quarter-finals and, following a 3-3 draw in the first leg at the Bernabéu, Real Madrid got the better of the English side away from home thanks to a penalty shoot-out in which Lunin was the great hero, keeping out two spot-kicks. Bayern awaited in the semi-finals with the first leg ending 2-2 at the Allianz Arena (Vini Jr. brace). The Real Madrid fans once again experienced an incredible comeback at the Bernabéu as Joselu, with two goals in two minutes, led the team to another European final.
The six European Cups club
Nacho, Modrić, Carvajal and Kroos, who signed off his playing career in the best possible way, tied level with the legendary record held exclusively by Paco Gento with the conquest of this trophy. Only five players ever have the honour of boasting six European Cups in their trophy cabinet; a select group made up entirely of Madrid players. On top of that, Nacho and Modrić set a new record for the number of trophies won at Real Madrid with 26.
Accolades
Thanks to Vini Jr.'s performances throughout the campaign, in which he scored 6 goals and provided 4 assists, he was named the Champions League Player of the Year 2023/24. Bellingham (best young player) was also recognised after a dream first season at the club. Valverde's stunning volley against Manchester City at the Bernabéu was voted the best goal of the competition. Furthermore, after this latest European success, four Real Madrid players were selected in the Champions League team of the year: Carvajal, Rüdiger, Bellingham and Vini Jr.
The La Decimoquinta party
Following the victory in London, the kings of Europe paid a visit to the Comunidad de Madrid, the City Hall and the Almudena Cathedral to present the trophy to the madridistas. Next up, Real Madrid shared some unforgettable moments with the fans at Cibeles and at the party at the Santiago Bernabéu. To conclude, president Florentino Pérez placed the trophy won at Wembley in the Real Madrid City boardroom, which houses the 26 European Cups won by our club (15 in football and 11 in basketball). An unforgettable end to a brilliant season in which the club won three trophies: the European Cup, the Spanish League and the Spanish Super Cup.
