The Whites captured the title on the penultimate matchday.
Forty-one years have passed since Real Madrid clinched the club's 19th league crown. On 27 May 1979, the Whites mathematically sealed the title on the penultimate matchday, despite slipping to a 2-1 defeat to Sevilla at the Sánchez Pizjuán. Sporting's draw against Celta in Gijón saw the madridistas claim a second successive title success.

The Whites ended the 1978/79 campaign four points better off than Sporting, who finished second. Real Madrid went the whole season unbeaten at the Santiago Bernabéu. In that squad, coached by Molowny, the leading light in the goalscoring stakes was Santillana, who was the league's top marksman with 18 goals.
