On April 20, 1968, the Whites won the championship with a 2-1 victory over UD Las Palmas.
April 20 is a day of celebration for Real Madrid, who won their thirteenth league title in 1968. The team coached by Miguel Muñoz secured the championship in front of their home fans on the penultimate matchday, with a 2-1 victory over Las Palmas in which Velázquez and Pirri were the scorers.
That result opened up a definitive gap over the team from the Canaries, who were second in the standings and finished third, and Barcelona, who were runners-up. During the season, Amancio, Velazquez and Pirri were the top scorers for Real Madrid with 10 goals each. In addition, the Whites had the best defensive record in the league, conceding just 26 goals with Junquera winning the Zamora award for that campaign.
