Real Madrid - Espanyol

Varane: "We produced a strong and solid performance to keep a clean sheet"

NEWS | 07/12/2019

"Feeling the fans' support gives us the motivation to keep going”, explained Valverde.
Raphaël Varane, Fede Valverde and Rodrygo spoke to the press in the wake of Real Madrid's 2-0 triumph over Espanyol. Varane, who struck the opening goal, reflected on the match in the following terms: "It was a really hard-fought contest in which the opposition covered a lot of ground, pressed us and forced us to really show our fitness. We put in a strong and solid performance not to concede and were patient enough to get the goal".

"I think that we performed well and did pretty well. We tried to play our game, but we were found wanting with that final pass to do more damage. We're a team. The strikers help us and we help them. It's a team job and I'm happy with my goal".

Unbeaten run
"We're more confident, looking fit and are on a good run. We've got to keep it up because between now and the end the year we have some tough games and we'll be giving our all".

Mendy's first yellow
"They're questionable incidents and I couldn't see it properly from my position. After his second yellow we held out well for the remaining minutes. We kept a clean sheet and that's really positive".

Valverde:"We’re making the most of this spell"
"I always try to do my bit. The communication with Casemiro and [Toni] Kroos
is vital and I try to move and look for the ball and get in behind. It's down to the whole team and [Zinedine] Zidane, both in games and training and we're doing pretty well".

Rodrygo: "I love playing in this shirt and being part of the starting line-up, so I’m going to keep fighting to do so every day".

“The coach asks us to get forward and try to fill the box if possible. That’s what I try to do and we did a good job of it today. The second goal is a prime example, I managed to get to the by-line and pull it back for Benzema to turn home”.

Fine run
“Beyond the work we put in, it’s about the satisfaction and motivation to win games. We’re making the most of this spell and enjoying ourselves with the fans. We can really feel their support and that helps us to keep going”.

Rodrygo: “We’re thrilled to have won the game”
“You always have to keep winning here at Real Madrid and we’re thrilled to have picked up another three points today. I love playing in this shirt and being part of the starting line-up, so I’m going to keep fighting to do so every day”.

Connection with Vinicius Jr.
“Vinicius is a wonderful player. He’s back performing brilliantly, just as we expect from him. It’s always good for any player to have a game like that. His biggest strength is how direct he is. We’re always chatting together in training. Today we got the chance to play together, even though we weren't close to each other, with him on the left and me on the right. We’re players who like to improvise and all it takes is a quick look to understand what the other wants to do”.
