Atlético v Real Madrid: Out to retain top spot in Metropolitano derby clash

News | 28/09/2019

The Whites are seeking a fourth league win on the spin as they bid to remain top of the pile (9pm CET).
The first derby of the season proper is upon us and it comes at an ideal time for Real Madrid, with Zinedine Zidane's charges heading to the Wanda Metropolitano on the back of an excellent week of results. Sunday's win in Seville and the victory recorded over Osasuna on Wednesday night sent the Whites top of the LaLiga standings. The leaders will now be aiming to take maximum points against Atlético to retain their place at the summit.

No different to any other derby meeting, this one is expected to be extremely demanding and a high-intensity affair between two sides who know each other inside out. “We'll be giving our all to try and get the win. We know the challenges that we'll face against what's a really strong opponent, but they'll also have some challenges to deal with", noted Zidane in the build-up. The madridista boss had a full squad at his disposal, barring Marco Asensio, Ferland Mendy and Rodrygo, for the team's final training session ahead of the encounter.

Real Madrid are unbeaten in their last four league visits to Atlético.

Real Madrid are gunning for a fourth straight LaLiga win over Atlético here.
The Whites are one of the two sides that remain unbeaten as we head into Matchday 7, the other being Athletic. Away from the Bernabéu, the madridistas' record reads two wins (Celta and Sevilla) and a draw (Villarreal).

The opposition
Atlético, meanwhile, come into the derby amongst the division's frontrunners. Diego Simeone's troops have picked up 13 points (W4, D1, L1) and are yet to taste defeat on home soil. João Félix and Vitolo, with two goals apiece, are the hosts' leading goalscorers in the league. As for the sides' head-to-head record, Real Madrid are unbeaten in their last four LaLiga trips to Atlético (W2, D2).
