Real Madrid won the second of their 14 European Cups 66 years ago. The final took place at a special venue, the Santiago Bernabéu. The Madrid fans were able to see their team defend the title champions of Europe, having won it the previous year in the first edition of the tournament, on 30 May 1957. This time the opponents were Fiorentina. After 70 minutes of the game, Di Stéfano opened the scoring, and a few minutes later, Gento settled the final with the second goal, beating the Italian goalkeeper.
On the road to La Segunda, Real Madrid had a tough tie against Rapid Vienna in the first round, which required a play-off match. Nice and Manchester United were the opponents in the quarter-finals and semi-finals respectively. The win against Fiorentina meant that our team won its first League and European Cup double that season.
