Defeat following controversial refereeing decision in Barcelona

MATCH REPORT. 25/03/2023. Mireia Jiménez

Olatz Rivera handed Barcelona an extremely dubious penalty.

Real Madrid lost to Barcelona in the Clásico which went the way of the hosts following some controversial refereeing by Olatz Rivera. The official gave a non-existent penalty after Athenea went up against Salma Paralluelo, who dived in the box to tip the balance in favour of the azulgranas with 77 minutes gone.

Madrid opened the game very well at the back, resolutely thwarting the Blaugranas' attacks and trying to create chances when they had the ball. As the minutes went by, the game gained pace, although neither side was able to create any real danger. The first shot on goal came in the 32nd minute when Crnogorčević's header was saved by Misa. Madrid responded soon after through Weir, who tried to surprise Paños with a long-range shot after a good individual move.

The game went into half-time with Real Madrid having the lion's share of possession and finishing the first half very strongly. After the break, the game's first contentious decision arrived. Geyse should have seen red for stamping on Ivana's ankle but the referee opted to show only a yellow card (46'). With 76 on the clock, Olga stole the ball back from Aitana, only to see a foul given against her in the build-up to the moment which decided the clash. Salma Paralluelo went down easily in the box under Athenea's challenge and Olatz Rivera mistakenly pointed to the spot, where Rolfö stepped up to make it 1-0 to Barcelona.
