Real Madrid lost to Barcelona in the first leg of the Copa del Rey semi-finals at the Santiago Bernabeu. An own goal by Militão decided the match, in which Ancelotti's side were far better, but were unable to convert their dominance into goals. The Whites controlled the game with a high tempo and that work paid off after ten minutes with a goal from Benzema, however, the goal was disallowed for offside.
Barcelona were barely in our area, but they took the lead in the 26th minute in a move in which Ancelotti's men were unlucky. Courtois was better than Kessié in the one-on-one, but the rebounded hit Militão and found its way into the home goal. Real Madrid had a great chance to equalise before the break. A spectacular long pass from Kroos in the 41st minute saw Carvajal's volley from inside the area go over the bar.
Video.0-1: The ticket to the final will be decided in Barcelona.
The second half got underway with an immediate chance for our team as Valverde whipped the ball across the box with 49 on the clock, only for Araújo to get a foot on Vini Jr.’s effort and send it behind for a corner. Barcelona were defending very deep and Real Madrid carved out another dangerous opportunity on 58’ with Vini Jr.’s fierce cross which forced Ter Stegen to intervene. The team pushed for the leveller until the end, penning the opposition back and persistently searching for openings, but the goal just wouldn’t come. The last chance of the evening fell to Rodrygo with 90 minutes gone, as he unleashed a curling effort from the edge of the box which whistled inches wide of the post. The semi-final will be decided at the Camp Nou on April 5.
