Goals by Modrić and Militão were not enough to earn the visitors anything away at Rayo.

In Vallecas Real Madrid slipped to their first defeat of the LaLiga campaign. The game began at a frantic pace and the Whites went close early on with a freekick by Rodrygo, but it was Rayo who opened the scoring in the fifth minute courtesy of Santi Comesaña’s neat finish from inside the area. The visitors swiftly looked to pull level and almost found a way through with long-range strikes from Militão and Valverde.
Rayo made the most of the losses in possession by Ancelotti’s men and one of these meant that Courtois was forced into making a smart save to prevent Álvaro from making it 2-0. The Belgian once again came to his side’s rescue when he parried Isi’s fierce strike, before the madridistas equalised in the 37th minute. Asensio was fouled inside the area by Fran García, referee Martínez Munuera initially failed to award to penalty, but the VAR intervened and the spot-kick was given. Modrić stepped up to make it 1-1.

The goal spurred Real Madrid on and they got in front 3 minutes later. Asensio lofted a corner and Militão headed perfectly to take it to 2-1. The side had done the hardest part, but the advantage didn’t last long. Álvaro picked up a loose ball in the area and sent a powerful left foot shot past Courtois (44th minute).
The madridistas almost extended their lead right after the restart. Asensio initiated a counterattack before playing in Rodrygo but the Brazilian’s effort sailed over the crossbar.  The game was now being played at high intensity and Rayo soon responded through Camello’s headed effort that missed the target (59’). Six minutes later, a penalty was awarded to the hosts, with the help of the VAR, after a handball by Carvajal. Trejo’s initial spot-kick was brilliantly saved by Courtois. Pero Martínez Munuera decided a re-take was necessary as the keeper had moved too early, and the Rayo player slotted home at the second attempt. Madrid pushed forward and in the 90th minute Rodrygo had a golden opportunity to pull level, but he missed the target. The hosts saw the game out to win 3-2 and the Whites must now turn their attention to Thursday’s clash at the Bernabéu against Cádiz (9:30 pm CET).
