Real Madrid Stade de Reims

Ferenc Puskas and Alfredo Di Stéfano were the big names of the 1958/59 season. The Hungarian was Real Madrid's star signing and La Saeta Rubia was the best player in Europe. He was awarded the coveted Ballon D'Or for the second time (1957 and 1959).

After brushing aside teams like Besiktas, Wiener (Austria) and a great Atlético de Madrid, the Whites faced an old acquaintance in the final. Stade Reims, led on this occasion by Just Fontaine, awaited them with an eye on revenge. But they had no luck.

It was a comfortable game for Madrid. Mateos opened the scoring after two minutes and, despite several setbacks (missed penalty and Kopa injury), the Whites dominated throughout. In the 49th minute, Di Stéfano was on target for the fourth time on the trot. He put the match to bed with a powerful strike from 25 metres. Real Madrid were crowned champions of Europe again.

Trivia

José Emilio Santamaría: "I recall that for our victory against Stade Reims we were each given 35,000 or 40,000 pesetas. We celebrated in style and at the end of the match, in the changing room, Bernabéu said to us: You're the dog's bollocks!".

Puskas joined Real Madrid aged 31 and out of shape. Luis Carniglia looked at his figure and said: "I don't know what I'm going to do with this man; he has a few spare kilos". Emphatically, Bernabéu said: "That's why you're there to get him fit".

Madrid were winning the final a goal to nil and Mateos asked Di Stéfano to let him take a penalty. He hit it well, but missed, and at the end of the first half the club manager, Antonio Calderón, gave him a telling off. Mateos said that Di Stéfano came to his defence.
