Sublime Real Madrid display in Vitoria rounds off perfect November

MATCH REPORT. 25/11/2021. Edu Bueno

Our team delivered a fantastic performance against Bitci Baskonia in the Euroleague to close out the month with a 100% record.

Real Madrid head into the international break having put the gloss on a perfect month of November which has seen them take eight wins from eight. Laso's men clinched a fifth successive Euroleague victory at the Buesa Arena, their best run in the competition so far this campaign. They did so with an outstanding display to see off Baskonia, who were helpless to stop the madridistas' onslaught.

Our boys set themselves well on the way with a +19 run in the first half (the lead would grow to 28 by the end) and 7 triples in the second quarter. Heurtel (12 points, 9 assists and a PIR of 18 in 18 minutes), led six players in double PIR digits. Causeur (13 points) and Abalde (11 rebounds) were also in fine form, among others.

The game got underway at an impressive pace and following the opening minutes which saw Baskonia pull ahead thanks to Enoch's 7 points in a row (9-7, min.5), Real Madrid took control with a simply devastating close to the quarter. They tightened up at the back, forcing six turnovers and shackling the opposition's center completely, which then allowed them to run riot all over the court. Thanks to some superb counter-attacking basketball with Causeur on fire (11 points in 10 minutes) and serious efficiency near the hoop (Abalde, Poirier, Tavares…), the team stormed to an 18-5 run to make it +11 at 14-25 with 10 minutes gone.

Madrid relentless
Madrid continued to prove watertight at the back as they switched their point-scoring to the perimeter, delivering a three-point exhibition with seven in the period. Two for Heurtel, three for Rudy, another for Williams-Goss and the last one for Llull. All the while, Poirier continued to show off his talents on the offensive rebound (4), ably assisted by Abalde (8 rebounds at the break). Our team raced to a 19-point lead towards the end of the first half, with Fontecchio  the only Baskonia player finding the basket with any regularity. A complete first quarter saw Laso's boys head into the locker room with 53 to their opponents' 34.

The restart brought more of the same as Madrid were fluid on the inside, while continuing to dominate the rebound. Tavares, Yabusele and Causeur added to the deficit further, before Baskonia looked to react and take advantage of the madridistas dropping off in offense, with a fine spell for Peters. But it wasn't to be, as the Whites came back to life with another offensive run led by Heurtel and Hanga. A triple on the buzzer by the Hungarian forward brought the third quarter to a close with the largest margin of the game (47-71).

Another superb team win based on solid defense
If there's one thing that this Madrid has above all else, it's impeccable concentration levels. With the game all but won, they continued their impressive rhythm, all based on a strong defense, while everyone chipped in. Poirier, Tavares, Heurtel, Williams-Goss, back on song following his injury, and Llull, who moved level with Spanoulis into fourth on the all-time Euroleague wins list (223). In the end it was a +28 victory (60-88, min. 40) in our team's 25th game of the season, having won 22, picked up a trophy already, and now atop the league and the Euroleague. They now have a full week to prepare for Maccabi's visit to the WiZink Center (Thursday 2  December, 8:45pm CET).
