This agreement has brought about the opening of a school for all children, including the most disadvantaged, in Port Harcourt. The Real Madrid Foundation has been working with the Rivers State Ministry of Sport since last season to run a socio-sporting school for disadvantaged children in the Nigerian city of Port Harcourt. A month after the centre was built and opened, which was back in September, the socio-sporting school began to operate with a Real Madrid Foundation-run clinic on football and values.
The participants in the project will be children from vulnerable backgrounds, but during the opening of the clinic other children also took part in an effort to promote social integration and the idea of football being a game for everyone.
Nyesom Wike: "It's a dream come true to learn about the values instilled by the Real Madrid Foundation and it's allowing the children of Rivers to dream big".
Butragueño explained that "the socio-sporting school will help the Nigerian children to become better people by learning about values through football". Meanwhile, Wike commented: "It's a dream come true to learn about the values instilled by the Real Madrid Foundation and it's allowing the children of Rivers to dream big".
Training courses in Nigeria
The next step in this agreement will be to roll out an educational football programme for coaches and teachers within Nigeria's educational centres. The Real Madrid Foundation will lay on training courses for the coaches about training methodology and instilling values through sport.
This collaboration agreement also involves various of the Real Madrid Foundation's socio-sporting projects throughout Africa, where the club heads up over 50 projects and assists over 7,500 children across the continent.
