The Real Madrid Foundation is collaborating in the second edition of the Santo Tomé charity marathon, organised by the Fundación Filhos de São Tomé y Príncipe, the social sports school's partner in the country. It will be held on 26 June in the city of Santo Tomé, but for anyone who is unable to attend, there is a chance to help out by purchasing a charity shirt number, which will allow those with limited resources to take part, while also contributing to the project.
The initiative aims to aid the sustainability of the social sports school which helps over 250 children at risk of exclusion, while boosting the numbers of beneficiaries who can take part in the sporting activities. This is a way of raising awareness of the school's efforts which seek to secure children's rights and provide healthy alternative leisure activities, education and training, working on values through sporting practice in an attempt to distance young people from the common dangerous of the region such as drink, drugs and underage pregnancy, helping them to take control of their own development.
200 athletes of 14 nationalities
The race is supported by the Ministry for Sports and is designed to be accessible to all levels. Alongside the 42km route, there will also be a half-marathon of 21km and a 10km race, departing from Angolares, Ribera Afonso and Santana respectively. Some 200 athletes from 14 different countries are expected to take part.
