Today marks 32 years since one of the legends of Real Madrid basketball passed away. On 3 December 1989, Fernando Martín died in a traffic accident and Madrid fans bade farewell to one of their heroes at just 27 years of age. The tragic event occurred while he was on his way to the Palacio de los Deportes to watch the match between Real Madrid and CAI Zaragoza.

Fernando Martín made his mark on the club and on Spanish basketball because of his quality, courage and personality. As a player for our team, Martín won four league titles, one Club World Cup, two Cup Winners' Cups, one Korac Cup, three Copa del Rey trophies and one Spanish Super Cup. He was a real leader on the court and was idolised by the fans, Real Madrid consequently decided to retire the jersey with his number 10 as a tribute to the club legend.

Aside from his career as a Madrid player, Fernando Martín occupies a special place in the history of Spanish sport, as he became the first Spanish player to compete in the NBA in 1986. He was also a member of the Spanish national team that clinched the silver medal at the 1984 Olympic Games. His record with the national team also includes a silver medal at the 1983 European Championship.
