Argentina - España

75-95: Spain crowned basketball world champions

NEWS | 15/09/2019

Rudy and Llull win the World Cup; Campazzo, Laprovittola and Deck settle for silver.
We knew we'd end the day with a madridista as world champion, and on this occasion the pendulum swung in favour of Llull and Rudy. Spain were dominant from the early stages, storming to a convincing win over Argentina in the World Cup final in Beijing (China). The two players were crucial for their national side once again. The forward from the Balearic Islands netted 11 points and took 10 rebounds, while the point guard hit 15 points. It was a decent performance from Madrid's Argentine contingent too : Campazzo (11), Deck (24) and Laprovittola (17).

Spain flew out the blocks and took the game to Argentina, who were quickly twelve down inside four minutes (2-14). But Sergio Hernández's men reacted well to get back to within a single point, as the baskets dried up for Spain over another four-minute spell. Another positive few minutes for Spain saw the first quarter finish 14-23.

It's a second title for Rudy, and a first for Llull.

Rudy had a vital role to play at the start of the next quarter, with two triples to take his side to +17 (14-31), the biggest gap in the game so far. It was Real Madrid's new signing, Laprovittola, who hit seven consecutive points in response to reduce the deficit. Spain stood strong in offense and defense though, maintaining the lead at 31-43 as our boys, Laprovittola (9) and Rudy (8) dominated the scoring.

No surprises to the end
Argentina were unable to produce a reaction following the half-time break, and Scariolo's charges hit the highest lead of the match at +22 (33-55), as the Argentinians failed to find the baskets they have done throughout the tournament. With ten minutes to go, the score board in China read 47-66.

The albiceleste did eventually kick into gear late on to get back to within 12 points in the closing stages as Deck propped his team up. But Spain were not about to be surprised, and went on to be crowned world champions for a second time. It's a second title for Rudy, and a maiden trophy for Llull.
