“The result was good, an important one”, said the Frenchman.
Karim Benzema opened the scoring in the win over Ajax at the Johan Cruyff Arena, further boosting his numbers in the European Cup. The forward has now scored 60 goals in the competition, level with Van Nistelrooy, and is now fourth in the all-time top scoring list in the competition. Ahead of the madridista striker are Cristiano Ronaldo (122), Messi (106) and Raúl (71).

The 60 goals from Benzema in the European Cup are split between those he scored at Real Madrid (48) and those at Olympique Lyon (12). Some of those came in some important games such as the final where the Whites won la Decimotercera.

Match milestone
The Frenchman has also now played 450 games for Real Madrid after featuring against Ajax. Benzema spoke about the game: “They are young and pushed us from the start. We didn't start well, but we didn't concede any goals. Both sides were good in the second half. The result was a good one, an important one, but I don't think we played well. We know they can play well and we need to be better in the return leg”.

"I enjoy playing with Vinicius Jr. because he's a player that works really hard and you can see that, during the course of a game he does a lot of good things. During the game, I picked up a knock early on and with the cold it's gradually hardened up. It hurts right now, but I'll rest for a day or two and it'll be fine".

Statistics in a Real Madrid shirt
Benzema's 450 appearances have come across the following six competitions: LaLiga (299), the Champions League (92), the Copa del Rey (39), the Spanish Super Cup (eight), the Club World Cup (eight) and the UEFA Super Cup (four). He has plundered 211 goals in these outings, a return which makes him the club's all-time sixth-highest goalscorer. In terms of his trophy haul, since making his debut in the 2009/10 season, he has lifted four Champions League titles and Club World Cups apiece, three UEFA Super Cups, two LaLiga titles, a pair of Copas del Rey and two Spanish Super Cups.
