Real Madrid ends 2018 just as it started: with victory in the league, against Kirolbet Baskonia at the Buesa Arena and with Causeur the star man from the off. In that time we’ve seen a league and Euroleague double as well as the Super Cup last September. This afternoon, in match-week 14 encounter, which brought to an end the year, Laso’s side won because they were better from the start (they didn’t go behind at any point in the encounter). Great performances from Yusta, Tavares, Thompkins, Causeur and Campazzo, the quintet that put Laso out from the off.
Switched on in attack and aggressive in defense from the first seconds. That was part of Real Madrid’s success at the Buesa Arena. With Causeur shining against his old team (10 points), with Tavares imposing his play (5 and 7 rebounds), Campazzo playing with ease and with Yusta successful from 6.75 (2 treys), the Whites counted their attacks (5 on the bounce) with baskets and recorded 26 points in ten minutes against the best defense in the league. And defending well, limiting Baskonia to only 12 points (12-26).
    Whites’ bench
moved things around, brining on Taylor, Ayón and Rudy but the team continued along the same path. A +18 (13-31) stirred the home side, thanks to Vildoza and Shengelia, mainly from the free throws. But it was Rudy, once again, who got things back in order with seven consecutive points, three of them with a trey from eight meters. And when Baskonia managed to reduce the deficit to less than ten, the small figure of Campazzo emerged to take over the match with two baskets and an assist for Tavares to make it 35-47.

Ayón played his 200th game in the ACB.

Baskonia had to try to fight back and they did. Hilliard, Shields and Shengelia stepped up and reduced the difference to ten again until Madrid got down to work. Another Yusta masterclass on the treys (two to take him to nine points), Thompkins (7) and the Campazzo-Tavares connection, drove Perasovic’s defense crazy. The Whites, with a Baskonia shut out in attack, hit another 13 points for a +26, leading to the maximum difference in the match (48-74).
    Scoring drought
After half an hour the match became end-to-end, something that benefitted the home side thanks to a 11-0 run that Laso didn’t like and stopped with a timeout. Madrid went six minutes without scoring and lost the freshness in attack of the first three quarters. Campazzo broke the points drought with a three-pointer, then another from Thompkins and a basket from the Argentine base brought to an end any chance of a comeback for the team from Vitoria. Real Madrid got their eleventh league victory of the season (74-91).
