Real Madrid succumbed to Betis deep into injury time in a game they could easily have won with the chances they created. The match began with a scare for the Whites, when Carvajal had to back-peddle to clear a Sanabria effort off the line with just 3 minutes gone. From then on though, the chances all began to fall to the hosts, who seven minutes later crafted their first real opportunity. Ramos brought the ball down in the box at the back stick, and Cristiano Ronaldo tried his luck with a beautiful back-heel. Javi García was well placed between the posts to ensure it stayed out.

The Whites continued to pile the pressure on, and Modric caught the defence unawares on 17’ when he counter-attacked by driving the ball to the edge of the visitors' area, but his well-struck shot ended up in the side netting. The hosts were looking threatening and the Croatian popped up once again just five minutes later, drifting into the box to turn Carvajal's pass towards goal, but his effort flew over the bar.

More chances
Despite Real Madrid having been on top, the first half finished goalless - and not due to lack of chances. There were two more, one for each side, before the teams headed down the tunnel for the break. Both goalkeepers demonstrated fine form to keep the scores level. Keylor Navas' diving save kept out a Francis effort from the edge of the box on 34', before Adán pulled off a tremendous stop on 42’, after Modric's through ball had found Isco with room to shoot in the area.

Real Madrid failed to score, having done so in the previous 73 games.

Real Madrid came into the second half with renewed energy. They kept the opposition firmly inside their box and had two clear chances in the first ten minutes. The first chance landed for Cristiano Ronaldo in the 51st minute after Bale sent in a world class cross, but the Portuguese striker couldn’t convert from near the penalty spot and saw his shot rocket over the bar. It was Ronaldo’s turn to send in a cross in the 55th and Carvajal, who was lying in wait at the back post, could only hit the woodwork with a wasteful effort. Betis looked to go ahead as Francis took on Keylor Navas in the one-on-one before being denied.

In the 72nd minute, Zidane made a double change. Modric and the injured Marcelo were replaced by Lucas Vázquez and Borja Mayoral. The hosts’ opening goal looked to be imminent and more so as Carvajal crossed in for Bale who took an acrobatic shot. Adán proved his mettle in goal with some sublime reflexes to push the ball on to the post. Mayoral was forced to test Adán in the dying moments but to no avail, as it was Sanabria who thumped home a stunning header to get the goal, and the three points for Betis.
