Such was the madridistas' dominance in this edition, they were able to win the league on matchday 34, four games prior to the end of the campaign.
Real Madrid finished the 1987/88 LaLiga campaign, the third of five in a row won by the Quinta del Buitre, with an 11-point advantage over Real Sociedad. On an individual level, the team coached by Leo Beenhakker boasted the goalkeeper who conceded the fewest goals, and the leading marksman. Hugo Sánchez was named Pichichi with 29 goals and Buyo clinched the Zamora Trophy.
