On 15 June 1985, Real Madrid added another piece of silverware to the club's trophy cabinet after clinching the League Cup, a competition that the club contested for the four seasons between 1983 and 1986. Just like the knockout rounds, the final was played over two legs and the team fought back from a 3-2 defeat in the first leg to see off Atlético following a 2-0 return-leg success.

PinedaSantillanaStielike and Míchel were on target in the final, which the team reached after accounting for Barcelona and Sporting Gijón in the quarters and semis respectively. This win saw Luis Molowny's men lift the second trophy of the season after having previously claimed the UEFA Cup.
