On 15 June 1985, Real Madrid collected a new trophy to add to their silverware list. This was the League Cup, a competition held for four seasons, between 1983 and 1986. The final, like the knock-out rounds, was played over two legs and the Whites came from behind to beat Atlético 3-2 in the first match and won the trophy in the second game with a 2-0 scoreline.

PinedaSantillanaStielike and Míchel were on target for the madridistas in the final. En route to the trophy decider, Real Madrid had to defeat Barcelona and Sporting Gijón in the quarter-finals and semi-finals, respectively. Luis Molowny‘s side lifted their second trophy of the season, after previously winning the Uefa Cup.
