It is 31 years since the passing of one of Real Madrid's great legends: Juan Gómez Juanito. The former Real Madrid player lost his life in a traffic accident on his way back to Mérida on 2 April 1992 after watching a match at the Santiago Bernabéu against Torino. He was 37 years old at the time and was the Mérida coach.
Juanito was born on 10 November 1954 in Fuengirola (Málaga) and made history at Real Madrid between 1977 and 1987. He played 401 official matches at the club, scored 121 goals and won 2 UEFA Cups, 5 Leagues, 2 Copas del Rey, 1 League Cup and 1 Pichichi Trophy (top scorer).
Since that fateful moment, Madrid fans still remember him in the seventh minute of every game at the Santiago Bernabéu when they chant "Illa, illa, illa, Juanito maravilla". As well as combining quality and grit in his style of play, Juanito was the subject of some unforgettable images in Madrid's history, most notably for his leaps of joy in the comeback against Borussia Mönchengladbach in the 1985/86 UEFA Cup.
