Real Madrid Castilla brought their pre-season to an end with a penalty shoot-out victory away at Numancia in the Memorial Domingo Heras trophy. Both teams had numerous chances to score, but neither side managed to find the net in normal time. Raúl‘s men will now kick off the league campaign on Saturday 27 August against Linense at the Alfredo Di Stéfano (7 pm CET).
The game got off to an evenly matched start, with the hosts from Soria looking to take an early lead. Numancia almost opened the scoring on the 15-minute mark, but Moha was denied by the woodwork. This spurred the visitors into life and they begin to control possession and carve out chances of their own, while the home side looked to beat Cañizares with shots from distance.
Academy side dominate
After the re-start, the academy side began to press for the opening goal and on the hour-mark Arribas tried his luck from the edge of the box but Ayesa was on hand to save. With twenty minutes left on the clock, Rafa Marín headed in a freekick, but the goal was ruled out for offside. Cañizares prevented Numancia from taking the lead with a full stretch save from Amorrortu’s freekick, before Bruno’s long-range strike was pushed away by the goalkeeper. In the closing stages of play, Numancia found the net, but the referee ruled the goal out for offside in the build-up. The match finished goalless and the clash was decided on penalties, when Cañizares stopped two spot-kicks.
