Zidane: “I saw the handball but it is down to the referee's interpretation”

“The team showed a great attitude right to the end and all we were lacking was the goal”, commented the coach.
Zidane spoke to the press at the Santiago Bernabéu after Real Madrid-Betis: “We played a good game, especially the first 45 minutes. The team had a great attitude until the end and we just needed a goal. It is a shame but we have to move on”.

“I am not going to talk about the referee. I saw the handball but it is down to the referee's interpretation. It is not hard to see from there, the deciding factor was the referee, he did not check VAR. He made the decision and we have to respect it. It is not going to change anything. We know what happened, we saw the handball, but you have to respect the referee's decision”.

“We dropped two points today, we could have had all three. I am going to take the positives from this as it was a two-horse race and in the second half they did create some problems for us. They have a good team with some top players. We had chances but just didn't finish them”.

This is the best league in the world and there are no easy games.

“All the teams at the top have dropped points. It’s the best league in the world and there are no easy games, they don’t exist. We’ve all seen the results today. Any team can cause you problems. It’s not easy to win LaLiga and that’s what makes it so beautiful at the same time”.

Lacking goals
“There’s no problem. The other day we scored five goals but we won’t score that many every day. We know we created chances and all we were lacking was one to go in to get ourselves into the game. It’s about the opposition too and they defended brilliantly. We have to accept it and move on”.

“Everyone makes mistakes. We’re up the top with two or three teams, that show’s we’re not doing a bad job. We had the chance to pick up a third win in a row but it wasn’t to be. It’s not a big issue, we know this is a tough league and we have to keep going”.

“I thought the team was in good shape physically so that’s why I only made the two changes”.

James and Bale
“Both players were with us before the game encouraging their teammates and that’s the most important thing”.
