On 11 December 2000, Alfredo Di Stéfano and Florentino Pérez were presented with the accolade by FIFA.
Real Madrid ended the year 2000 by being named the Club of the 20th Century by FIFA. Alfredo Di Stéfano and Florentino Pérez were on hand to collect the trophy, which was presented during a ceremony held by football's world governing body in Rome. Real Madrid were awarded with the accolade having claimed over 42% of the vote, comfortably beating off competition from Manchester United and Bayern Munich, who drew 9.69% and 9.18% of the votes respectively.

This distinction was awarded in recognition of Real Madrid's on-field achievements and for the club's contribution to the development of football around the world. When the award was presented, the Whites had lifted 8 European Cups and had twice been crowned world champions (two Intercontinental Cup triumphs). The club's trophy haul also featured two UEFA Cups and Latin Cups apiece, 27 LaLiga titles, 17 Copa del Reys, five Spanish Super Cups and a League Cup.
