NEWS | 09/01/2018 | Alberto Navarro | PHOTOGRAPHER: Ángel Martínez"We’ve got a match against Numancia and we want to finish the tie well", he added.
"I believe in my squad. They are my values and I will defend them until the end. I believe in what I do and will keep going until the end, until they change me. That’s it. There’re a lot of games to go and I’ll need everyone. A lot of people think that there are some players who’re not up to it and that they shouldn’t play. When a player isn’t playing well, you have to help him and work things out. What interests me the most is unity. I don’t think that when things aren’t going well you should blame other people".
"We’re all in the same boat and nobody is going to get off of it. It's everyone's fault, I'm the first one. We’ve had two spectacular years and it’s important to tell people not to forget about that because although the most important thing is the future, we build on the past and I’ll not throw away what we did".
The match against Numancia
"We’ve got a return match and we want to finish the tie well. We want to play well and get through to the next round. We have to try to keep a clean sheet, score and have a good game. That’s it".
"I don’t need anyone and that's that. I don’t want anybody. We have a squad, we started with them and I believe in my players. There are always difficult times during the season, which is what you’re trying to convey, but I don’t think like that. There’s everything to play for and we’ll see what happens at the end of the season, which is when things are analysed".
Motivate the squad
"This is a team that has won a lot of titles and motivation is an important factor. We always have to look at what we can improve. We could think that the league is over but the important thing is what I can contribute to winning titles and winning important matches. I have to start motivating my players again to find how to sort this out".
"I’ve explained things because everybody wants to look at the negative side but what I’ve got to say is above all, to the people who say that I have thrown down the gauntlet to the president and the club as I don’t like that because it’s not true. I know that one day this job will be over but I’ll do my work at 3,000% and I believe in the work we’re doing. I’ll not throw in the towel. I’m committed to my responsibility and I’ll continue like this until the end. The plan is to work and work even more because it’s not enough. No one is going to take away my desire to continue working hard".
Meeting with the players
"I'm not going to tell you what we were talking about. They’re chats, like at every team. We’re here to find solutions, talk and try to make things better. It was a conversation a little longer than others, but nothing else. I don’t talk if I don’t think it’s necessary. I don’t do it for the sake of it. When we meet is to get something out of that meeting".
"When what we want doesn’t happen, we have to think about our work. The players think the same and you have to work more than ever in every way. It’s not something that is physical or mental. It’s a bit of everything. We must continue and be stronger. There's no other option".
His situation as a coach
"I'm not happy with the situation. I’d like it to be doing better in the league and we can improve but what I have to do is keep working and giving my best. That's what interests me the most, that and trying to get my players to do the same. We must try to get everyone to give a little more and that’s it".
"The criticism isn’t going to change. I'm not hurt and I have to accept it. I knew that this was a difficult task and I have prepared every day for three and a half years knowing that this could happen and even more so here. It’s part of my job. Life is a bit like that but nobody is going to take away my desire to keep working hard".
The draw in Vigo
"We did some good things against Celta and I’ll take away the good things. The second half was not good, but we’re not going to go crazy and with hard work we can move forward. We gave away the ball easily and that's not usual. We also dropped off a lot in the second half. We have to talk, say what we think and help everyone improve. I know that everyone can chip in and more so when things get a little ugly. That's when we need a little bit from everyone".
