Under Di Stéfano’s guidance, Real Madrid became the best club in the world.While Real Madrid was busy steamrollering Europe, in 1960 the Copa Libertadores was created in South America. The first champion was Montevideo club Peñarol. The Intercontinental Cup was created in order to find the best club in the world. The first edition saw Madrid, as the European Champions, take on Peñarol. The first leg was played in Montevideo and it finished 0-0.
In the second leg in Madrid, on 4 September 1960, the Whites came flying out of the blocks and had a 3-0 lead after ten minutes. The second goal came from Di Stéfano. Real Madrid eventually won 5-1, proclaiming themselves world champions for the first time.
