On 3 April 1955, Real Madrid claimed their fourth league title. The Whites mathematically secured the crown on the penultimate matchday by defeating Atlético Madrid 2-4 at the Metropolitano stadium. The visitors settled the game before the break with a brace from Di Stéfano and a goal from Rial. The other goal was scored by Olsen.

That season, Real Madrid were five points clear of Barcelona in the table, only losing one home game and three away fixtures. Juanito Alonso secured the Zamora Trophy, while Di Stéfano was the team's top scorer, with 25 goals. Enrique Fernández began the season as coach, but Villalonga took over on matchday 14. That same campaign also saw the Madridistas lift the Latin Cup after beating Stade de Reims in the final 2-0 with a double from Rial.
