That season ended with Real Madrid finishing comfortably in first place with 52 points. They were followed by Atlético de Madrid with 40 points. The top scorer that year was Puskas, who scored 27 goals, and goalkeeper Vicente won the Zamora Trophy. The Madrid team was coached by Miguel Muñozwho won the first of five consecutive league titles. They also won the Intercontinental Cup at the start of that campaign.
