Real Madrid Foundation sends 13,300 items of sports clothes and balls to support reception of refugees
The Red Cross and CESAL are amongst the organisations that offer the refugees support upon their arrival in Madrid.
The mass arrival of refugees to Spain is another of the key support mechanisms for the Ukrainian nationals that the Real Madrid Foundation is assisting with as a part of the Todos con Ucrania campaign that was launched on 5 March and that saw Real Madrid C. F. donate 1m euros to cater for the needs of those who have been displaced from Ukraine. Aid is also being offered in Spain through donations of clothing and sports equipment made to the reception centres in Madrid that receive the refugees
The Red Cross and CESAL are amongst the NGOs who are responsible for offering the homeless Ukrainian citizens initial support as they arrive in Spain. The focus of CESAL’s work in Madrid is on supporting the displaced population that has travelled from Ukraine and providing them with key material to save lives. The Real Madrid Foundation has collaborated in this action by donating 13,300 items of sports clothing and garments to keep those affected warm.
Meanwhile, the Spanish Red Corss are responsible for two key phases: welcoming refugees in centres, which are government-run, and its aim is to guarantee that basic needs are covered and to enhance personal skills to ensure that the refugees are able to live an independent life via social, legal, physiological, employment and language support, which is only rolled out once the individuals have received a positive response to their international protection request. The Real Madrid Foundation is involved in both phases and the institution has donated over 200 toys, balls and pieces of sports equipment, as well as 300 children’s kits to support the Red Cross in the reception centres across the Community of Madrid.

The partnership between the Red Cross and the Real Madrid Foundation is a permanent feature and was in place prior to this crisis. Indeed, each season, many hundreds of children who are supported by the Red Cross on a daily basis receive scholarships to attend the Real Madrid Foundation socio-sporting schools across various autonomous communities. One of the Red Cross’s main logistics centres in Madrid in this crisis is one of the venues where the Foundation works with the Red Cross in its campaign for the homeless. In this instance, although those affected may end their stay in the reception system, they may still require support to cover their basis needs, improve their skills and continue their social and employment integration process. In this regard, the Red Cross advises Epicenter for children, a Real Madrid Foundation partner in Ukraine, to bring and welcome in 10 families of those who participate in the Foundation’s socio-sporting schools.

CESAL has also rolled out a family placement system for Ukrainians in the Community of Madrid in conjunction with the Familias para la Acogida charity and the Ukrainian charity Con Ucrania. The host families receive detailed information about the nature of the care to be offered and the refugee families benefit from the necessary care. For both CESAL and the Red Cross, their biggest need is financial aid to send items to the conflict zone and the bordering areas, give that in-kind shipment is not currently very operative as the necessary items can be purchased in the bordering countries. You can help to cater for the needs of those affected via the platform set up by the Real Madrid Foundation.
