Real Madrid celebrates 300 Champions League matches

NEWS STORY. 14/03/2023

The club has won the competition more times than any other team since the format changed in the 1992/93 season and is the first club to have played this number of matches.

In the game against Liverpool, Real Madrid will play their 300th Champions League match. Following the change of format in the 1992/93 season, no other team has matched Real Madrid's achievements in Europe's top competition. Our club has played the most matches since then, followed by Bayern Munich (280) and Barcelona (277). We are also the club that has lifted the trophy the most times in the Champions League era (8), in front of Barcelona (4), Bayern Munich (3) and Milan (3).

The first Champions League trophy was won in 1998 in Amsterdam against Juventus, courtesy of an unforgettable goal by Mijatovic. Real Madrid went on to win the trophy again in 2000, against Valencia in Paris (3-0) with Morientes, McManaman and Raúl the scorers; and in 2002 in Glasgow. Raúl's goal and Zidane's unforgettable volley decided the final against Bayer Leverkusen (2-1).

Winning streak
In 2014, a historic run of success began with four Champions League titles in five seasons. It began with the victory over Atlético in Lisbon, with Ramos' 93rd-minute header and extra-time goals from Bale, Marcelo and Cristiano Ronaldo. Milan 2016 ( a penalty shoot-out win over Atlético), Cardiff 2017 (a spectacular 4-1 win over Juventus) and Kiev 2018 (3-1 win over Liverpool, including Bale's bicycle kick) will be unforgettable dates and cities for Real Madrid fans.

Another victory in Paris last season against Liverpool thanks to a goal by Vini Jr. and an MVP performance by Courtois in the final. These Champions League titles have been added to the six won before 1992 to complete the best trophy cabinet in the world with 14 European Cups.
